Investigation of hip discomfort in dogs

32 hip joints of 25 dogs were investigated at the Small Animal Clinic of the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover using arthroscopy and radiological examination. In the arthroscopic examinations 24 patients showed a pathological change of the synovial fluid in form of abnormalities in colour and shape of the villi, and 25 patients showed tears as well as fraying and even avulsion of the labrum in the acetabular labrum. “About half of the radiographic hip joints with no diagnostic findings showed arthroscopically pathological changes of the joint. Although all joints which showed arthroscopically full-thickness cartilage erosion, also radiologically showed changes. However, low-grade to middle-grade arthroscopic changes were only apparent” in about two-thirds of the patients examined radiologically.

The author thinks that “further studies with more patients are necessary to investigate the amount of complications in more depth, as well as determining long-term effects of the development of coxarthrosis”.
