Interview relating to the paper by Zetterström 2008

Helene Rosenberg interviewed Dr. Ulf Andersson on the occasion of the publication of his research group in Stockholm in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. Andersson sketches the history of the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using gold salts and highlights the importance of the intracellular cytokine HMGB1, a protein involved in the development of various rheumatoid diseases and whose effect on inflammatory diseases is being investigated by his team. He explains how the gold salt compound gold sodium thiomalate inhibits the release of HMGB1.

Andersson suggests that the inhibition of the HMGB1 release occurs on different inflammatory pathways and results from the heavy metal component itself. Furthermore, gold salts have an impact on the release of some mediators. Andersson presents a prospect regarding possible profound clinical effects and points out that there are probably many other inflammatory and infectious diseases where HMGB1 is released and in whose pathogenesis it plays a role.
