Two-year follow-up study of the pain-relieving effect of gold bead implantation on dogs with hip dysplasia
After the 6 months of the double-blinded trial 32 of the 42 dogs of the original placebo group then had gold beads implanted as well, while 7 continued as a control group. Thus 66 dogs had now obtained gold implants (combined gold implantation group). After 18 more months the owners and the vet performed the same evaluations as in the 6-month trial.
“The present study revealed that the pain-relieving effect of gold bead implantation observed in the blinded study continued throughout the two-year follow-up period.” Hip pain scored on a visual analogue scale (0…10) by the owners dropped from 5.1 on average on day 0 to 2.4 after 24 months in the combined gold implantation group, and from 4.4 to 3.0 in the placebo control group. The hip dysfunction score dropped from 4.3 to 2.2 in the gold group and was 3.9 and 4.0, respectively, in the control group.
